Reason 3: To put my experiences to good use
I had no quals from school, but became obsessed with studying. Why?
In 2007 I developed symptoms of PTSD believed to be brought on after the vehicle in which I was a PPO (Personal Protection Officer) was ambushed and blown up in Baghdad, Iraq. This incident was the last of a number of similar attacks I was involved in, but the one in particular that led to noticeable changes in my behaviour.
Hyper-arousal (hyper-focus / hyper-vigilance)
After moving from a personal protection role in Baghdad, to a Site Security Management role in Northern Iraq, I regularly struggled to sleep as my mind felt stuck on high-alert - I was constantly scanning for threats. After seeking advice I made a conscious decision to direct the increased stimulation (repeatedly asking myself questions), which was something I could not control, into personal and professional development - something I could control.
Philomath (a lover of studying and learning)
I channeled my hyper-vigilance into an obsession with operational decision making, and strived to understand the concepts of risk, risk assessment, risk management and leadership. Whilst many thought I was mad with a mobile phone full of recordings and a living room of six to eight white boards full of text, the motivation to become 'qualified' gave me a much needed sense of purpose.
Finally, Fit4P is a personal project
